Let's Talk COLOUR SPACE | EV Photo Evolve Series

Introducing the Evolve Series. A set of blog posts that aim to educate and help you evolve as a photographer. At anytime you can use the search bar for “evolve” and all of these posts will come up and you can choose what content you need.

So I hope to be providing loads of valuable content over the coming months so feel free to get in touch and let me know what you want to hear about but first up…. COLOUR SPACE - WHICH ONE IS FOR ME?

We are often asked which colour space we use and how we like to receive files. The answer is – multiple. Basically we use different colour spaces dependent on how you have processed the files .

The three major ones are:

  1. Prophoto  - This is an extremely wide colour space . The human eye is unable to view all of the colours in it and there is not a monitor on the market that can display it (in full).  Les Walkling refers to this as an “archiving “ colour space.  Its fine to work in and save your files off in but when you go to print you may want to bring it back to Adobe98 which will give you a more definitive idea on screen of the end product.

  2. ADOBE 98  - Beautifully wide colour space ideal for fine art printing as well as high end digital reproduction. Your Eizo monitor will reproduce 99% of this on screen and is the most universal for photographers.

  3. sRGB  - Much smaller colour space used for web reproduction and also older wet lab RA4 machines such as Fuji Frontiers.

So what do you send us?
What do you give your clients ?

We have a list on the wall of all our clients and their preferred colour space  so when we run your job it is done in the space allocated to your name. As we can run both ADOBE and sRGB here this is not a problem, we just need to know how you work your files originally.

The ADOBE98 will give you a wider colour gamut but its important to remember that again – This depends on your process. For example if you process all your files as sRGB then convert them to ADOBE98 at the end - this process will be pointless.

If you are a photographer who deals primarily with families and deliver digital files then you need to ask yourself .  “What will they be doing with these?“ They will be putting them online – facebook etc , and if they get them printed chances are it will be at a big chain store like HN. Both of these applications require an sRGB file for the best output. So if this is you then process and deliver as an sRGB file.

Something to consider as a photographer outputting and archiving sRGB as a best option for your clients. If you like to enter awards with physical prints, such as those run by the AIPP, you are going to get much more from the printing process with an ADOBE98 file. Again, do not pull your client file and convert to ADOBE98 for printing as this is pointless - either start your processing again from the RAW with the fine art print in mind, have archived an ADOBE98 set of images before creating a duplicate copy to deliver to your client in sRGB, or finally just send your sRGB file finding peace with the fact it is not the best option for fine art printing.

Going back to client delivery, the worst possible result is to deliver your client files in Prophoto and for them to have these printed on an sRGB machine. All of the information which is “out of gamut “ …which will be ALOT , is squished into the edge of the sRGB space – especially in the greens. This will be far from a desirable outcome and you wont even know that’s what your image looks like in their home. They will end up with a print that looks nothing like the image on screen or that you intended.

If you process using Adobe Lightroom then bear this in mind because the default is automatically set to Prophoto when exporting files.

We hope that this has cleared up the differences between colour space options and highlights this main takeaway - it is important to process for the intended output.

Have a great week! Tristam

Its 2020! Happy New Year from EV Photo Pro Lab

Happy New Year again from our family to yours and from our beautiful part of the world at Kingscliff on the Tweed Coast - Northern NSW. We are excited for 2020 and creating many amazing projects for you all.

We knew 2019 had to be a big year of refreshing all things online for our business and we launched our new website in the first week of January. It was always going to be a Stage 1 and our goal this year will be to grow this to a place of information that adds value to both our retail and professional clients. Any areas you would love more information on please let us know and we will try and cover these.

2019 also ended up being time to refresh a lot of things!

NEW LARGE FORMAT 64” PRINTER
We welcomed our new 64 inch Epson Large Format Printer. The 44 had really pushed hard to keep up so it was a needed upgrade to the EV family and deciding to jump to the 64 inch means we can service a lot of jobs that we previously had to turn down. So get creative with your larger work… Tristam loooooves loading those huge rolls haha!

NEW PRICELIST FOR NEW PRODUCTS
With this change brought a price list update to include new products and services. The Studio Essential Frame range has been popular in 2019 as a consistent Black and White frame option for our clients. Our long time relationship with providing a range of beautiful Oak options continued along with a custom service for one off or specialty frames through to exhibition collections. While we have provided a high end Oak Canvas Framing option for many years, we now offer many colours in a new more cost effective range.

NEW SMALL FORMAT AND SCANNER
An upgrade to a new small format machine was thrown in there too. Again a little bit of a forced addition after crazy print numbers and these necessary big purchases seemed to continue through the year with us also adding a new high end scanner back to our Epson family. Some technology we didn’t replace as our industry changed and it reached its life and we took scanning off our service offering but its back! It really is such an important thing to be able to digitize your memories and we would love to assist you with this. Hopefully this makes our little Epson collection happy and new for the new decade!

NEW APP FOR PRINTING FROM YOUR PHONE
With the increase of clients finding printing photos from their phones a difficult task that they wished they did, but never got around to, we joined forces with Local Prints Now to bring you an easy app to turn your phone pics into prints. Far too often we are hearing people lose all these precious memories and realizing they didn’t have many events on their digital camera back ups. Check out the retail section on our website for the link to download!

PLANET ARK BOX
We are passionate about doing what we can for the environment such as reducing waste, sorting our waste religiously, reusing anything we can through preschools for craft and we now have a Planet Ark Box so you can drop your used print cartridges here for effective recycling.

AWARD & EXHIBITION PRINTING
As always, we are passionate about award printing and print making for exhibitions. In 2020 we hope to blog more content and helpful information but also shout out amazing artists and what they have going on and those who have been awarded. 2019 in Queensland AIPP awards alone we printed many awarded images including the Highest Scoring Print, QLD Professional Photographer of the Year, QLD Travel Photographer of the Year, QLD Print Handlers Award and 5 Category Finalists. So awesome to be able to offer a professional service to these amazing photographers.

TRISTAM EXHIBITED
It had been a while since we have had a sole or collective exhibition and in 2019 along with Matt Barwick and Justin Ealand “NATURAL-An Exhibition” was created and delivered to Kingscliff Community Hall for a single night of much needed arts infusion into our local community. I think this is worthy of its own post so will leave it at a >>> To Be Continued status…

COMMUNITY
On the note of community… we support where ever we can in our local community whether its capturing images and supporting our local SLSC, donating to our local schools or supporting charities. While we come out the other side of family events that have affected us financially, cash donations aren’t really our thing right now but we believe in giving back. Our nation is burning and when local restaurant Fins and Fins Plantation House created an event to support bushfire victims we knew we had to step up and help. Tristam donated a limited edition fine art framed print that contributed $1000 to this evening and we wish there was so much more we could do both for fires and for our drought stricken country.

2020
So these are just some of the the main events of 2019 that jump out… if you have read this far thank you! and thank you for supporting us and we are looking forward to a positive and prosperous 2020 and decade to come.
